With only 2 sleeps to the Cowan Cup, we caught up with the Team captains to gather what thoughts (if any) they have about this Sunday’s clash of the titans... (L-R) Captains Christian Cowan, Scott Buchanan and Peter Loughran. Pic credit: David McMichael So Peter, it must be said, you’ve been the most successful team in Cowan Cup history. Is there any secret to your success?
Secret to success hmmm... a big secret is the layout of the tournament. With teams being split Buchanan, Cowan and Loughran a huge benefit I've had over the years is not having Buchanan’s or Cowan’s on my team. Only joking - it’s all about the draft. Christian, you’ve never won your own Cup, is there any reason for this? Well I think it would be a little classless to win a tournament with my own name attached to it, you know I can’t present the trophy to myself. But really I’ve been close and pipped at the post a few times so I think we can win it this year with the team I have. Scott, terrible display last year, you came dead last. Any reason for this, and do you think you’ve corrected the error? Yep good reason, first play of the first game against Team Cowan, Jamie Wilson broke my QB’s (Jo) thumb with his devastating rush off the edge. Hopefully by picking him this year, he doesn’t damage me or whoever is in at QB. Hopefully he can do the same this year...minus the breaking thumbs bit. Obviously the draft happened last Sunday, having had time to reflect on your time and set a gameplan, how you feeling about your squads? [PL] I feel good. I just rated all the players available and got as many as I can from the top side of things. I dont worry too much about if people will turn up or any outside of football inferences, I just pick quality players with good hands and experience. [CC] I feel good about my squad this year, think there’s a good spread of offense and defence there and a good amount of flag experience. [SB] I feel great about my squad, everyone I wanted was there when I was picking so it made my job easier. Nice blend of styles from the speed of Neil Maxwell and Jamie to be height of Jason Duddy and Lawrence Ruddock, plus we got a hall of famer...I’m feeling pretty confident. Lastly fellas, any predictions or last words? [PL] For predictions obviously gonna choose myself wouldn't be much of a competitor if I chose an opposing team. [CC] I think another close year for all teams, hopefully another deciding match for team Cowan at least. [SB] Nothing but a win! The Cowan Cup is going to be replaced with the Buchanan Bowl next year whenever we finish celebrating with it on Sunday. The Cowan Cup isn’t the only important thing on Sunday, it’s the final day for donations for the Toy Drive for the Children’s Ward in Craigavon Area Hospital. The Cowan Cup is the last chance to donate as we’ll be heading up on Monday night to visit the ward.
